HM Treasury and DEFRA have launched a consultation on the plastic packaging tax announced in Budget 2018.
The proposed tax would be levied on the production and import of plastic packaging with less than 30% recycled content. With 2 million tonnes of plastic packaging used each year, the vast majority of which is made from new, rather than recycled, materials, the government wants to use economic incentives to encourage the greater use of recycled plastic.
The consultation is broad, and asks for input as to which packaging should be in the scope of tax and which businesses will be liable for the tax.
The consultation document can be read here and you can provided responses online.
