Where there is a long residential lease (generally one for a term of at least 21 years at a low rent) there is a problem for the tenants. As the years pass and the lease has less time left to run, it will eventually reach a point when it is unattractive to buyers or lenders. There are statutory rights to extend a lease or even to acquire the freehold, but the rules are complicated.
