RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY: Lease extensions and leasehold enfranchisement (long leases of residential property)

Where there is a long residential lease (generally one for a term of at least 21 years at a low rent) there is a problem for the tenants. As the years pass and the lease has less time left to run, it will eventually reach a point when it is unattractive to buyers or lenders. There are statutory rights to extend a lease or even to acquire the freehold, but the rules are complicated. At HMG Law we have experienced lawyers who can explain the rules to you and lead you through the process.
